Old direction sign at Cowgill, proving Dentdale is part of Yorkshire ! Dentdale, Cumbria
Dentdale - the Yorkshire Dale which is no longer in Yorkshire. Although quiet secluded Dentdale is now within the boundaries of Cumbria, it lies within the Yorkshire Dales National Park, and indeed it was up until 1974 part of the West Riding of Yorkshire, as the old road sign pictured left demonstrates (click on the picture to enlarge). As it still is essentially a Yorkshire Dale, I've included it, and the three pubs within it, on this site.
The only significant settlement is the huddled-together village of Dent itself, one of the most peculiar and charming in the Dales, with the old Yorkshire/Cumberland border town of Sedbergh lying at the foot of Dentdale. Dentdale's narrow roads can get gridlocked in the tourist season, and an autumn or winter weekend visit is much more rewarding.
I've also used this page to include one or two pubs outside Dentdale, such as the Station at Ribblehead and Old hill Inn at Chapel le Dale.
Any inns / pubs on this page which I think are definitely worth a visit have their photographs to the left outlined in green.
Sun Inn, Dent Dent - 'The Sun Inn' (SD 705 870)
Free House owned by the former owner of Dent Brewery , which was established by Martin Stafford in 1987 with the brewery being near Cowgill. This is a basic and unspoilt Dales pub with one of the most photographed pub exteriors in the Dales. The pub does bar meals and offers real ales. Dent's two pubs are only about fifty yards apart.

George & Dragon, Dent
Dent - The George & Dragon' (SD 705 870)
Free House - Owned by the Dent Brewery, this being more geared up towards accommodation than the Sun Inn and with a more modern interior. Open all year round now.

Sportsmans Arms, Cowgill Cowgill - 'The Sportsmans Arms' (SD 768 863)
Free House - lying almost within the shadow of the impressive Artengill viaduct, which carries the Settle & Carlisle line across the top of Dentdale, the Sportsmans is a fairly basic but welcoming Dales pub which at the last visit had Skipton's Copper Dragon beers on draught. Bar meals served, a good real fire and a limited amount of B & B accommodation.

  Around Dentdale & Upper Ribblesdale
Station Inn, Ribblehead Ribblehead - 'The Station Inn' (SD 764 791)
Free House - Situated right next to the famous Ribblehead viaduct and station, at the very head of Ribblesdale, The Station Inn retains the atmosphere of an isolated wayside Inn, though can get quite busy, lying as it does on the B6255 between Hawes and Inlgeton. The imposing Station Inn offers meals and accommodation etc, as well as ample outdoor recreational opportunities. The men's toilets offer what must be one of the best views from a urinal in the country, offering great views of Whernside.
Skipton's Copper Dragon beers on draught at last visit.
Tel. 01524 241274
Old Hill Inn, Chapel-leDale Chapel-le-Dale - 'The Old Hill Inn' (SD 744 777)
Free House - lying at head of the little valley which carries the river Doe down to Ingleton, the Hill Inn is popular with walkers, being below the flanks of Ingleborough, and has a very traditional bare boards and stone interior. Bar meals served.
A reasonable range of real ales served.

Some closed Pubs in Dentdale and around

Gearstones Inn Ribblehead - 'Gearstones Inn' (SE 780 800)
The Gearstones shooting lodge / Inn closed sometime after the Second World War I think and is now used as an outdoor pursuits centre. You can read about it's history here if you want.
