National Trust Fountains Abbey Web Site Open Pubs (from South to North - roughly)
This page covers a fairly disparate rural area - from close to Knaresborough in the South East towards Masham in the North West and passing through the atmospheric Fountains Abbey area. There are plenty of small pleasant villages in between containing some interesting pubs. Sadly, as elsewhere, several have closed in recent years and others have been sold off to pub chains, their interest in and attitude towards village pubs being positively cavalier at times.

Any inns / pubs on this page which I think are definitely worth a visit have their photographs to the left outlined in colour.

West Front of Ripon Cathedral
A Small Selection of Pubs in Ripon City

One of the smallest cities in England (Wells in Somerset is the smallest I think) Ripon lies on the old county boundary between the West and North Ridings of Yorkshire. Much of Ripon's appearance closely resembles that of the North Riding market towns and it's an attractive place for visitors to wander around, with the Cathedral being the dominant feature and attraction of Ripon. Although not as grand as the larger cathedrals such as York, it has a warmness and intimacy lacking in the larger ones.
While there a plenty of Inns and pubs in Ripon few, to be honest, stand out particularly, though plenty of them are pleasant enough places to pop into for a drink.

Below are the few pubs in Ripon which stand out from the rest for the discerning pub goer, and if you only visit one, then visit the One Eyed Rat - a bit out of the way but well worth the trouble.

The One Eyed Rat
Allhallowgate -The One Eyed Rat'
Free House - (one of the very few, and maybe the only one, in Ripon). Formerly 'The Lord Nelson' and without doubt the best Real Ale pub in Ripon; certainly the most individual pub. Bare boards but a cosy interior with proper fires and a large selection of draught and bottled quality beers from England and elsewhere. No music, food, children or jukeboxes. One of the very few pubs left in the North of England to possess a Bar Billiards table. If you only visit one pub on a visit to Ripon and appreciate 'proper pubs', then this is the one to go to. Can't recommend it enough.
Tel. 01765 607704
The Royal Oak Kirkgate - 'The Royal Oak'
Tied House. Dark interiored pub on Ripon's most attractive street, and a nice place from which to watch the world go by near to the Cathedral. HRH Prince Charles' favourite Ripon pub having twice visited it in recent years (1994, 2002) as part of his interest in Ripon's regeneration. Recently (March 2006) bought by Timothy Taylors with their normal range of excellent beers on sale.
Tel. 01765 602284
The Water Rat Boroughbridge Road - 'The Water Rat'
Until the 1980's 'The Alma Inn'. Nothing special inside but a very pleasant riverside location with views of the Cathedral and the Alma Weir - a great place to sit in the summer. Real Ales, food and attractive weirside conservatory.
Tel. 01765 602251

Some Closed Pubs

North Stainley - 'The Cross Keys' (SE 287 768)
Free House.
Closed in April 2004. This was a fairly small and unspoilt wooden interiored pub which the cricket team used to use. A shame it's now closed.
Photo Pending Risplith- 'The Black-a-Moor' (SE 257 624)
Closed in 1987 (Last landlord Dave Campbell)
On the main Pateley Bridge-Ripon road.

Winksley- 'The Countryman Inn' (SE 252 712)
Closed 2001.
Former Free House which was noted for its downstairs bar. Closed summer 2001 during the 'Foot and Mouth' outbreak, which seemed to be used as a convenient excuse to close the pub.

Sutton Howgrave - 'The White Dog' (SE 315 792)
Closed app. 1997. A former quiet and isolated free house with a 'front room' atmosphere. Used to serve Websters beers! Impossible now to tell that it was a pub.
