The Nidderdale Pub Net is a
non-commercial and privately maintained guide aimed primarily at
listing rural and market town pubs and Inns in the Yorkshire Dales and
surrounding rural areas. None of the pubs listed have asked, or paid,
to be featured on these pages so I have no axes to grind or people to
please! The site isn't meant to be a comprehensive guide to the opening
times and meal services offered by the pubs and inns listed; however,
each entry is accompanied by a telephone number for the establishment
concerned if anybody wants to obtain further information.
The social significance of rural pubs is
undoubted, but sadly the continued existence of the rural pub is, for
a number of reasons, under threat as never before.
It is estimated that approximately one rural pub each day is closing
down in the country as a whole, as pressures on their survival mount
daily. Many rural pubs have thrived as a result of location and
diversification., but unfortunately many Free Houses have succumbed to
the tempation of either closing or selling out to the big pub chains,
whose relentless ‘McDonaldisation’ of pubs in this country continues at
a frightening pace. The main aim of this site is therefore to be a
record of the public houses in my home area - past and present.
Thankfully, however, the rate of pub closures in the area covered by
these pages does seem to have slowed in the past few years so there is
hope amidst the gloom !
If anybody has any relevant or interesting
current or historical information about any of the pubs included on
these pages then please send an e-mail.
There are historical 'gaps' about many of the pubs - particularly the
closed ones - which need filling. Unfortunately, however good my
intentions, through lack of time I cannot keep up with all the changes
that happen to the pubs featured on these pages, which is why notice of
any significant changes would be welcome. Furthermore, if anybody has
photographs of any of the closed pubs as they were when open, then
please feel free to contact me, again by e-mail.
