Swaledale offers a sharp
contrast to neighbouring Wensleydale.
Smaller, more isolated and with a more intimate and rugged landscape
than its grander neighbour to the south, Swaledale bears comparison to
Upper Wharfedale. Unfortunately though there is little economic
activity left in the upper dale, and the villages there are dominated
by holiday and weekend homes, as is Upper Wharfedale.
There are far less hostelries than in Wensleydale, with only two
currently open above Reeth. Although not strictly in Swaledale, I have
included the famous Tan Hill Inn as this seemed an appropriate page to
include it on.
Any inns / pubs on this
page which I think are definitely worth a visit have their photographs
to the left outlined in colour.

Tan Hill - 'The Tan Hill Inn'(NY 897 068)
Free House - Without doubt the most famous and most remote pub in
Yorkshire. The highest Inn in Britain at 1732 feet above sea level and
at the point where the county boundaries of Durham, Cumbria and North
Yorkshire meet. Meals, Real Ales and a bunk barn on offer. Lots of
memorabilia inside and electricity is supplied via a generator. After
over twenty years in the hands of Alec and Margaret Baines, Tan Hill
changed hands this summer after their retirement.
Excellent website by the way.
