Wensleysale Business & Tourism Association Open Pubs - from East to West
Taking the confluence of the river Ure and Bishopdale Beck as the starting point for Upper Wensleydale and working up the Dale, the landscape becomes more rugged and the valley narrower than further down the Dale, although the valley slopes still exhibit a broadly sweeping nature. Tourism is more pronounced in the Upper Dale, although its 'capital' Hawes, still retains a fairly bustling atmosphere. Beyond Hawes, signs of habitation become fewer as the road winds its way up to lonely Garsdale Head and the famous station on the Settle-Carlisle railway line. The loneliness is punctuated by one interesting pub however, The Moorcock Inn

Any inns / pubs on this page which I think are definitely worth a visit have their photographs to the left outlined in colour.

The Wheatsheaf Hotel Carpberby Carperby- 'The Wheatsheaf Hotel' (SE 009 899)
Free House - Orientated towards residential trade but with a friendly and accessible public bar. Nice web site - one of the best I've come across for a pub/hotel.
Tel. 01969 663216
Palmer Flatt Hotel Aysgarth Asygarth- 'The Palmer Flatt Hotel'(SE 010 883)
Free House - Former monastic hospice now a residential hotel with large public bar. Bar menu and Real Ales. Private fishing and accommodation available.
Tel. 01969 663228
The George and Dragon Aysgarth Asygarth - 'The George and Dragon' (SE 004 884)
Free House - Nice interior, Food, B. & B., public bar. Afternoon teas.
Tel. 01969 663358
George Inn Thoralby Thoralby (Bishopdale) - 'The George Inn' (SE 000 867)
Free House - Small and intimate pub. Good selection of Real Ales - maybe too many for the volume they must sell.
Tel. 01969 663256
Fox & Hounds West Burton West Burton (Bishopdale)- 'The Fox & Hounds' (SE 016 865)
Free House - B. & B., Food and Real Ales in one of Wensleydales most attractive villages. An unpretentious pub which still enjoys a good local trade.
Tel. 01969 663111
Street Head Inn Newbiggin (Bishopdale)- 'Street Head Inn' (SD 998 859)
Old coaching Inn dating from 1730. Fairly large but traditional and atttractive interior. Food and Real Ales (inc. Black Sheep)
Tel. 01969 663810
Victoria Arms Worton Worton- 'The Victoria Arms' (SD 955 900)
Free House - something of a legendary pub in Wensleydale, where time has stood still for decades. Landlord of forty years in Mr Ralph Daykin. Admittedly, probably not a place to visit if you're aiming to impress a female on a first date.
Tel. 01969 650314
Askrigg- 'The Kings Arms' (SD 948 910)
Free House - Former stables converted into a public house in the early nineteenth century. Large spartan interior.
Noted for food, but also does several Real Ales.
Featured as 'The Drovers Arms' in the popular 70's series 'All Creatures Great and Small'.
Tel. 01969 650258
Askrigg- 'The Crown Inn' (SD 948 910)
Free House - Friendly and popular village pub with welcoming open fire. If all you're after is a pint, then the Crown is a better bet than the Kings Arms. Definitely more of a local drinkers pub. Food & Real Ales
Tel. 01969 650298
Bainbridge- 'The Rose & Crown Hotel' (SD 955 900)
Reputedly a pub since 1445. Now a rural hotel with public bar.
Tel. 01969 650225
Hardraw- 'The Green Dragon' (SD 868 912)
Free House - best known for providing access to, and also owning, Hardraw Force 'the highest single drop waterfall in England' and the annual summer concert held in the natural ampitheatre below the fall.
Very 'Olde worlde' pub in a mediaeval rambling building reputedly dating from the 14th century and with bare stone dominating the interior and even in mid-summer it can be cool inside. Under the ownership since 2001 of D. Marc Thompson (former owner of the Kings Arms, Reeth) who since buying the pub has undertaken a very sympathetic renovation of the place. If you can only visit one pub in the whole of Wensleydale then visit this one.
Theakstons, Taylors & Black Sheep Ales.
Tel. 01969 667392
Hawes- 'The Board Hotel' (SD 873 898)
Next to the Crown in the Market Place. Accommodation.
Tel. 01969 667223
Hawes- 'The Crown' (SD 873 898)
Free House - small Market Place pub with open fire.
Tel. 01969 667212
Hawes- 'The White Hart Hotel' (SD 873 898)
Former coaching Inn now offering good value accommodation and meals.
Tel. 01969 667259
Hawes- 'The Fountain Hotel' (SD 873 898)
Former 17th century coaching Inn. Now mainly residential but with popular public bar for non-residents.
Tel. 01969 667206
Garsdale Head- 'The Moorcock Inn' (SD 798 927)
At the very head of Wensleydale and originally called 'The Guide Post Inn'. 1050 feet above sea-level making it one of North Yorkshire's highest pubs.
Fairly busy place in summer and an unspoilt interior. Over 60 Malt Whisky's on sale and Black Sheep beer (if I remember) along with the pub's own beer.
Well worth popping-in. Compare this photo with the (admittedly small) one on the 'old photographs' page.
